Yes, thousands of companies have been funded by angel groups on Gust (when last I checked, the number was pushing 10,000.) The problem, however, is that hundreds of thousands of startups apply for funding, which is not surprising once you understand that angel investors, on average, see 40 opportunities for each one in which t eventually invest. (By the way, if you think those odds are bad, keep in mind that venture capitalists invest in only one out of every 400(!) The situation is compounded (for the worse) by the fact that angel groups (as compared to venture funds) are not full time, commercial entities with large staffs and multi million dollar budgets. Instead, t are loose organizations of part-time investors, typically staffed by one overworked support person. As a result, such groups are often deluged with applications (my own group recieves over 175 applications each month), and in many cases don't have the bandwidth to respond to each one personally. While that doesn't excuse the lack of courtesy in not responding at all, it at least partially explains it. The bottom line, however, is that startup fundraising is a long, hard, slog…and never a lot of fun. While angels (and VCs) are far from perfect when it comes to communications, we as entrepreneurs can help them by carefully researching a group’s background, and only applying to ones where it is clear that our venture is a good match for them in terms of geography, industry, deal size, and so forth.
